Rogation Sunday, May 5th

What is Rogation Sunday? It is a day that the church celebrates and blesses the earth, seedlings, crops, and nature. The Rogation Days, the Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday before Ascension Day, originated in Vienne, France (not Vienna, Austria), in 470 AD after a series of natural disasters had caused much suffering among the people. Archbishop Mamertus proclaimed a fast and ordered that special litanies and prayers be said as the population processed around their fields, asking God’s protection and blessing on the crops that were just beginning to sprout. The Latin word rogare means “to ask”, thus these were “rogation” …

From Jean Swick

Dear Friends, On Good Friday last, I believe a rare and unusual phenomenon with spiritual significance happened to me! Although my sister, Gladys Steele, a former member in good standing of All Saints Brighton, has been with the Lord 8 years, I strongly sensed her presence, and after the Good Friday service was over, I went into the Guild Room adjoining the main part of the church. The pastor’s wife, Karen Schaeffer, pointed out to me a good sized needlepoint of the Last Supper, in a gold frame, which she had just hung on the wall in the lovely Guild …

Making Beautiful Music

Our organist, Ed Buechele honored our Lord during Holy Week with his talent. He also invited Anna Troxler, an accomplished cellist and soloist, to lend her talents to our solemn Good Friday service. There did not appear to be a dry eye in the parish during her solo, “What Child is This?”. Anna and another familiar soloist from our Christmas Eve Service, Matthew Mangus, returned on Easter. Matt’s beautiful rendition of “Because He Lives” was heartfelt and reverent. To top it off, words can’t describe the joy we felt when our own Karyn Kwiatkowski’s hymn “Mountain Laurel” was sung in …

Sharing our Time and Talents

Kudos to 13 parishioners who shared their time and talents with us during our Spring Clean-up Day on Saturday, March 23rd! You may notice that the church pews shined during Holy Week. The windows in the Guild Room sparkled. The floors were dust-free. The couches were vacuumed. The silver and brass gleamed. Spider webs were vanquished. Concrete was scrubbed. Shrubs were trimmed and our flower beds were cleaned. Pizza was consumed. Wow! It was a great effort! Sue contributed her sewing talent when she added a little bit of style and flair to our entrance way. Notice the beautiful gold …

We Hired A Painter!

By the time you read this, the painting of our sanctuary will be underway! The Vestry voted to hire Mario’s Painting Contractors to begin this long-overdue project. The altar wall will be painted a soft gold, along with the arched doorways on the side wall . The side and back walls will be painted a soft white. It will look clean, fresh and vibrant! Now, we all know that painting can be an expensive proposition—and this project is no exception. For wall repairs, a coat of primer, and two coats of paint plus scaffolding, the church will spend $7,400 on …

Alleluia! He is Risen!

Alleluia! He is Risen! Last week, we heard the Good News that He is Risen! When Lent started 40 days ago, we silenced our “Alleluia’s” and spent our Lenten Season deep in reflection and preparation to hear this joyous news. And what did I learn during that time? Each and every year, I am always humbled to be reminded of how the prophets in our Old Testament predicted a Savior. In hindsight, we can see the similarities between Jesus’ life and death and what was written by the Prophet Isaiah (52:13-53:12) about 700 years earlier. He had God-given foresight. We …
